Cyanoacrylate is an adhesive also known as instant glue or power glue. Its constituents are methyl 2-cyanoacrylate, ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate,2-octyl cyanoacrylate and n-butyl cyanoacrylate. They have a very short shelf life and have to be used quickly. They have to be used within a month from when the pack is opened and a year after manufacture. They are very strong adhesives and are very fast in their effect. This makes them useful in medical, industrial and household practices.
To make it more it more viscous, gel-like and easy to use, it is mixed with substances like fumed silica. Additives like rubber are added to add further strength so that the bond is more impact resistant. They polymerize in the presence of water to make long and strong chains to join the bonded surfaces. When applied thinly in the presence of normal moisture, reaction is rapid and the bond is strong.
In electronics, they are used to erect flying model aircrafts, models, prototype electronics and miniatures. Due to their water resistant properties, they are used in aquariums. They are employed for decoration of corals. Its use as a filler requires adding baking soda with it. This is useful in porous materials. Aircraft modellers propeller blades on light aircrafts use this routine.
It is used to track fingerprints on non-porous surfaces as a forensic tool. In woodworking, it is used as a fast-drying adhesive which gives a glossy finish. Repair work on piano, wooden instruments and furniture is done by making a mixture of cyanoacrylate with sawdust to fill cracks.
