Lithium is the first alkali in the periodic table. It is soft and silvery-white in color. It is also the lightest solid metal. It has high specific heat, high termic conductivity, low density and low viscosity. Lithium chemical compounds are lithium carbonate, lithium chloride, butyl lithium, lithium hydroxide and lithium bromide. These compounds have specific properties like a high co-efficient of thermal expansion, catalytic and fluxing characteristics and high electrochemical potential.
The primary use of lithium chemicals is in batteries. These are of two types, rechargeable and non-rechargeable. Rechargeable batteries are used in cell phones, laptops etc. It has lighter weight and energy density than nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries. Non-rechargeable batteries are used as cylindrical and coin shaped varieties used in digital cameras and calculators. These are light and have longer life than alkaline batteries.
Other use of lithium chemicals is in lubricants where they are used as a thickener in grease. In smelting of aluminium, it helps to reduce power consumption and bring down fluorine emissions. It is used in air treatment as absorption material for controlling humidity and drying systems. Pharmaceuticals sector use it as treatment for manic depression and other products.
