Laparoscopy is an operation performed in the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions (usually 0.5-1.5 cm) with the help of a camera. A miniature telescope like instrument called a laparoscope-with a fiber optic system shines light into the abdomen. The procedure makes way for direct visualization of the peritoneal cavity, ovaries, the outsides of the tubes, and uterus. Laparoscopy is used to diagnose problems such as cysts, adhesions, fibroids, and infections. Tissue samples can also be taken for biopsy using a laparoscope.
Laparoscopic surgeries are less invasive and generally have lower surgical site infection (SSI) risks when compared to open operations. Owing to these advantages, many patients and physicians increasingly prefer laparoscopic surgeries over other surgical procedure. Growth will come largely from expanding procedure volumes, as the demand for minimally invasive techniques continues to grow.
Technological advancements coupled with an increasing adoption of newer technologies by hospitals are also factors that propel the demand for laparoscopic devices. For instance, in August 2013, Lifeline Hospitals (Chennai, India) introduced a 3-Dimensional high definition video laparoscopic unit that can enhance accuracy while conducting complex laparoscopies surgeries. This unit acts as a bridge between regular laparoscopic surgeries and full robotic surgeries. Though the unit acts as a bridge between regular laparoscopy units, its immediate cost is high.
Asia accounted for a share of 24.46% of the laparoscopic device market globally, in 2013. The market was valued at $ $144.7 million in 2012 and is expected to register the highest growth rate of 7.2% from 2013 to 2018.
