Urology endoscopes are devices that are used in medical procedures to examine the urinary tract including the bladder, ureters, and kidneys. The procedure that involves the insertion of a scope into the bladder and further inside the ureter is known as the ‘retrograde’ approach to endoscopy. This approach is used to pass a plastic tube, called a stent, into the ureter to connect the kidney to the bladder. The stent enables the bypass of stones, structures, or blockage of the ureter in order to drain urine. The second approach called ‘antegrade’ or ‘percutaneous’ endoscopy involves reaching the kidney through the skin. It involves the use of a nephroscope for inspection of urinary stones and thus their removal with the help of flexible forceps/tipless stone baskets, or by flushing the stone into the system for removal through the natural route.
Endoscopes are utilized for various sub-disciplines of urology, including cystoscopy, andrology, endourology, laparoscopy, pediatric urology, and urologic oncology. Endourology includes all minimally invasive urologic surgical procedures and uses small cameras and instruments, which are inserted into the urinary tract. Laparoscopy includes surgeries of the prostate, kidney, and ureter, among others and uses endoscopes, while cystoscopy involves endoscopy of the urinary bladder via the urethra with the help of an instrument called the cystoscope.
Asia accounted for 24.5% share of the global urology endoscopes device market in 2013. The market was valued at $74.0 million in 2012 and is expected to grow at the highest CAGR of 6.8% from 2013 to 2018. Although various factors are propelling the market, others impede the acceptance of these devices. Prominent among these factors is the high cost of latest technology devices, which has delayed the penetration of these products in developing countries. Lack of skilled professionals is also a major concern for the market to develop. Considering various market dynamics, companies are eying Asian countries, which mainly include India, China, and Japan for lucrative opportunities in the future. Rapidly developing economic conditions, an improving healthcare sector, available disposable income, high prevalence of diseases, and a large consumer base in emerging economies such as India, China, Japan, and Singapore will drive the urology endoscope market in these countries.
Some of the urology endoscopes available in the market are Ureterorenoscopes (Olympus Medical Systems Corporation), Resectoscopes (Stryker Corporation), Pediatric Cysto-urethro-fiberscopes (Karl Storz GmbH & Co. KG), FAZONE CB (Fujifilm Holdings Corporation), and Flexor Vue Deflecting Endoscopic System (Cook Group).
