Europe Hyperspectral Imaging Market By Applications (Agriculture Industry, Environmental Monitoring, Food Industry, Life Science & Medical Diagnostics, Military & Surveillance, Mining & Mineralogy, Machine Control & Process Vision)-Forecast to 2019
The European healthcare industry is witnessing a shift in paradigm and is now skewed towards non-invasive diagnostics and therapeutic procedures, which not only cures serious illnesses, but also have fewer side effects. Optical imaging is one such technology with a potential to revolutionize clinical diagnostics and drug discovery in healthcare. The technology uses light to assess optical properties of tissues, and have a great potential in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases. Currently, the market for optical imaging is dominated by the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) segment, with over 84.8% of the market share in 2014, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.2% during the forecast period of 2014 to 2019. However, the market for Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI), which is currently in its nascent stage, is being mostly used in biomedical research and drug discovery in the areas of dermatology and neurology. The European hyperspectral imaging technologies market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 11.4% from 2014 to 2019.
The market for imaging spectrometry or "Hyperspectral" imaging is a relatively recent technology that captures and processes multiple narrow-band images over a spectral range, enabling a detailed analysis and identification of objects based on their wavelength fingerprints. Over the past few years, the HSI market has witnessed a significant growth because of its increasing applications in the area of agriculture (to monitor various parameters of soil and crop growth to control the conditions of fertilizers and water distribution), medical diagnostics (where this technology might enable neurosurgeons to perform tumor resections more precisely and avoid residual tumor regions), environmental & conservation applications (oil spill monitoring, fire damage assessment, vegetation stress, canopy studies, pollutant dispersal, wildlife monitoring, precision farming), and research projects (geology, marine research, forestry, and oceanography studies).
The paradigm in this market is shifting towards the usage of inexpensive, compact systems that are able to process large datasets sufficiently at high speed. Interestingly, the dynamics in the supply chain is also changing. Traditionally, OEMs source image sensors, spectral units, and cameras from different suppliers to create custom data analysis products. However, as a result of monolithically integrating spectral filters with image sensors, the interests of the image sensor vendors in moving higher up in the value chain is evident, as they have started to provide hyperspectral sensors, instead of generic image sensors without spectral filters.
Germany dominates the market for hyperspectral imaging in Europe, registering a 25.5% share of the market in 2014, followed by France. The market segments in the U.K. and Italy are expected to become substantial markets for hyperspectral imaging in the coming years.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a technique of collecting and processing information of objects across an electromagnetic spectrum, mostly in the visible (includes nearby IR and UV) spectrum. It is done to obtain the spectrum for each pixel in the image of a scene, which will be useful in finding objects, identifying materials, or detecting processes. The human eye sees light (visible light) coming from any object in three bands (red, green, and blue), while spectral imaging devices sees it in more bands.
Broadly considered to be the subset of spectral imaging or spectral analysis techniques, HSI collects and processes information across the electromagnetic spectrum. HSI creates images of narrow spectral bands that produce the spectra of all pixels in the cone of vision, using instruments called imaging spectrometers. The images are then combined and formed into a 3-D hyperspectral data cube to process and analyze. A hyperspectral image cube consists of a set of images that are layered one on top of the other, where each image represents a particular band of wavelength, thereby forming a structure called “hypercube”. Thus, in a hyperspectral image, each pixel consists of a spectrum over an appropriate spectral region. Every object has a unique characteristic across these different wavelength bands. HSI’s unique characteristic refers to its ‘spectral signature’. The sensors used are based on the convergence of spectroscopy and remote imaging. A sensor with 20 bands can be considered hyperspectral when it covers a range from about 500 nm to 700 nm with 20 bands each that are 10 nm wide.
This report covers the definition, description, and forecast of the European hyperspectral imaging (HSI) market. The major applications of the HSI market include food & agriculture, military surveillance, environment monitoring, life sciences & medical diagnostics, colorimetry, meteorology, mining & mineralogy, machine vision, and process control. The report also provides a strategic analysis of the key players in the European HSI market.
The full potential of the HSI market is yet to be explored, since its non-evasive and non-destructive nature make its applications wider and add additional weightage to the same. Albeit, in terms of market dynamics, there has been a significant paradigm shift observed where industries and research centers are broadly accepting HSI technology when compared to the traditional Optical Coherence, Near Infrared, and PAT technologies.
The Europe HSI market was valued at $11.3 million in 2014 and is expected to reach $19.3 million by 2019, at a CAGR of 11.4% from 2014 to 2019.
Among the hyperspectral imaging market applications globally, the mining & mineralogy segment contributed the maximum share with 19.5% in 2014, followed by the agriculture and environmental testing segments. The mining & mineralogy market is expected to reach $3.7 million by 2019, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.2% from 2014 to 2019. However, the fastest-growing application market is the life science & diagnostics segment, which is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.7% from 2014 to 2019.
The key players in the European hyperspectral imaging market are Headwall Photonics Inc. (U.S.), IMEC (Belgium), Inno-spec GmbH (Germany), ITRES (Canada), LemnaTec GmbH (Germany), Norsk Elektro Optikk A/S (Norway), SPECIM Spectral Imaging Ltd. (Finland), Surface Optics Corp.
