Laparoscopy is an operation performed in the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions (usually 0.5-1.5 cm) with the help of a camera. A miniature telescope like instrument called a laparoscope-with a fiber optic system shines light into the abdomen. The procedure makes way for direct visualization of the peritoneal cavity, ovaries, the outsides of the tubes, and uterus. Laparoscopy is used to diagnose problems such as cysts, adhesions, fibroids, and infections. Tissue samples can also be taken for biopsy using a laparoscope.
Laparoscopic surgeries are less invasive and generally have lower surgical site infection (SSI) risks when compared to open operations. Owing to these advantages, many patients and physicians increasingly prefer laparoscopic surgeries over other surgical procedure. Growth will come largely from expanding procedure volumes, as the demand for minimally invasive techniques continues to grow.
Prominent trends for the laparoscopic devices market include the rise of disposable products, increased demand for multifunctional devices, and the rapid growth rate of advanced the bipolar technology. Europe’s move to a DRG-based reimbursement system provides companies with the opportunity to entice hospitals to upgrade their equipment to more cost-effective, clinically efficient technology. Despite slow recovery from the European financial crisis, the overall laparoscopic devices market is expected to grow.
Europe accounted for a share of 26.56% of the laparoscopic device market globally, in 2013. The market was valued at $161 million in 2012 that is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2013 to 2018.
