Polypropylene is located between low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), when it comes to crystallinity level. Mixtures of propene and other monomers form a wide range of important co-polymers. When it is copolymerized with ethylene, it becomes flexible and tough. The Polypropylene is a type of plastic that has several commercial as well as residential uses. It is one of the most versatile thermoplastic polymers. The flow rate is a measure of molecular weight, and this rate determines how easily it will flow during processing. If a high Molecular Flow Rate (MFR) is recorded, the polypropylene fills the mold easily. With the increase in melt flow, the physical properties of the plastic decreases, such as the impact strength.
Polypropylene does not mold or deteriorate in the presence of bacteria, mold or other elements. Unlike other plastics, it does not absorb water. It is extremely lightweight and flexible. The properties of polypropylene make it a very popular material, in everyday use, for containers and boxes. Also, another important attribute of this material is that it can be used in any situation in which a non-staining and non-toxic solution is necessary. Besides, it is inexpensive and has numerous useful properties, making it the most important plastic. However, polypropylene is not as sturdy as other plastics such as polyethylene, it does not shatter very easily, however, it could get severely damaged prior to breaking.
Polypropylene is used in wide range of products. Due to resistance to fatigue, it can be used in items with high stress, such as piping systems, chairs and hinge mechanisms on water bottles. Polypropylene is processed into film for packaging and is used to produce carpet yarns. Moreover, it is used for injection molded articles-autoparts, appliances, furniture and house ware.
The polypropylene market is evolving constantly, and the new version contains an elastic element in them, giving them a rubber-like composition, which is used in food containers. Several research organizations have observed that BPA is not a very safe option for food packaging since the chemical could be hazardous to human safety, polypropylene does not contain BPA, and therefore it is used on a large scale in food packaging industry. Also, it is used to a large extent in the electronic products as it has a low level of electrical conductivity.
The polypropylene market in Europe is growing rapidly, as it is one of the most chosen materials for the production of films, used in packaging of convenience products, carton-sealing tapes, specialty healthcare items and technical parts (sewage/drain pipes, car bumpers, dashboards, electric cables). The use of polypropylene is seen in several applications, such as, structural tanks and linings, plating barrels, semiconductor processing equipment, orthotic and prosthetic devices and pump and valve components. Major research and technology facilities have been established in Europe, and this market is evolving with innovative solutions (by evaluating resins, testing ideas, and developing products).
The market is segmented into companies, products, types and applications. The products have been divided into Expanded Polypropylene, Polypropylene (Non Foams), Polypropylene Elastomers, Polypropylene Fibers, Polypropylene Films and Sheet and Polypropylene Foams. The different types of Polypropylene are Calendered, Extruded and Moulded. The various companies that are part of polypropylene market are Arkema S.A., Borealis AG, Braskem S.A, China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina), Dow Chemical Company, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont), Exxon Mobil Corp, Formosa Plastics Group, Ineos Group Limited, Lyondell Basell Industries and Reliance Industries Limited.
