Middle East and Africa Superplasticizers Market By Type (SNF, SMF, MLS, PC), By Application (Ready-Mix Concrete, Precast Concrete, Shotcrete, High-Performance Concrete, Self-Compacting Concrete, Fly Ash Concrete), By Form, By Geography – Analysis & Forecast to 2020
Superplasticizers are used in concrete mixtures to decrease water to cement ratio without affecting workability and avoiding particle aggregation in the mixture. In simple words, they enhance the quality of concrete mixtures while decreasing the use of water as compared to other admixtures. The most common and largest application of superplasticizers is in ready mix concrete, which is widely used than any other type of concrete. In the construction industry, the quality of concrete mix is of utmost importance for high-end constructions. Superplasticizers maintain the particle suspension in the concrete mix and decrease the water to cement ratio. This has resulted in the Middle East & Africa being a prominent market for superplasticizers, as most areas in the region have dry weather conditions.
Superplasticizers are available in liquids as well as powder forms; liquid forms are more commonly used that powder form, as liquid superplasticizers contain about 40.0% of active material and are easy to mix in the concrete.
The Middle East and Africa superplasticizers market is expected to reach USD 745.0 million by 2020. The market has been segmented into four different types, namely, Sulfonated Melamine Formaldehydes (SMF), Sulfonated Naphthalene Formaldehydes (SNF), Modified Lignosulfonates (MLS), and Polycarboxylates (PC). The countries considered in the geography are Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, South Africa, and others.

Superplasticizers are chemical admixtures that are used with concrete to reduce the water-cement ratio. They do not affect the workability and also help avoid particle aggregation in concrete mixtures. These are also known as high-range water reducers (HRWR), fluidifiers, or dispersants. Chemical admixtures are added to the concrete, just before it is placed on any surface. These admixtures help to improve the strength and flow characteristics of the concrete. Superplasticizers admixtures are essentially sulfonic compounds attached to the polymer backbone at regular intervals. These can be added in the proportion of 0.15% to 3.0% of the weight of cement in a concrete mixture; this proportion is higher as compared to normal plasticizers. The flow characteristics and slump of concrete varies with type, quantity, and time of addition of superplasticizers.
Superplasticizers can be classified into four types, namely, Sulfonated Melamine-Formaldehyde (SMF), Sulfonated Naphthalene-Formaldehyde (SNF) Condensates, Modified Lignosulfonates (MLS), and Polycarboxylate Derivatives (PC). The selection of the superplasticizer to be used is based on the type of concrete used, such as ready mix, precast, high strength, high performance, self-compacting, and shotcrete. The demand for these admixtures is influenced by the growing awareness about the ability of superplasticizers to reduce water-cement ratio; different combinations of superplasticizers help enhance cement performance. Rapid expansion of the construction industry has further propelled the demand of superplasticizers. Superplasticizers are application-specific and are available globally. There are different grades of superplasticizers available in the market. These superplasticizers can be either powder-based or liquid-based, depending upon the requirements of end users. Generally, liquid forms of superplasticizers are preferred as compared to their powered form, as it is difficult to mix powdered form in concrete.
The Middle East and Africa superplasticizers market is expected to reach USD 745.0 million by 2020. This report estimates the market size based on form, type, application, and geography. The report provides a comprehensive review of the major market drivers, restraints, challenges, and upcoming opportunities in the market. Based on geography, the market has been further segmented into major countries, such as Egypt, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa. Major players of this industry have also been profiled in detail with their recent developments and other strategic industry activities.
