Laparoscopy is an operation performed in the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions (usually 0.5-1.5 cm) with the help of a camera. A miniature telescope like instrument called a laparoscope-with a fiber optic system shines light into the abdomen. The procedure makes way for direct visualization of the peritoneal cavity, ovaries, the outsides of the tubes, and uterus. Laparoscopy is used to diagnose problems such as cysts, adhesions, fibroids, and infections. Tissue samples can also be taken for biopsy using a laparoscope.
Laparoscopic surgeries are less invasive and generally have lower surgical site infection (SSI) risks when compared to open operations. Owing to these advantages, many patients and physicians increasingly prefer laparoscopic surgeries over other surgical procedures. The number of laparoscopic surgeries is expected to increase in the near future, which in turn is expected to propel the growth of the laparoscopic devices market. The emergence of robot-assisted surgeries in Canada has further fostered the development of the laparoscopic devices market in North America.
North America accounted for the largest share of the laparoscopic device market globally, in 2013. The market was valued at $245.5 million in 2012 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2013 to 2018.
