North America Transmission System Market by Vehicle Type (Passenger Car, LCV, HCV) by Transmission Type (Manual, Automatic, AMT, CVT) by Geography (U.S., Canada, Mexico) - Analysis and Forecast to 2019

Automobile manufacturers are using various technology options to improve vehicle fuel economy, which include engine technology, transmission technology, hybrid and electrification technologies, and also vehicle technology (weight reduction, aerodynamic drag improvement). In order to satisfy customer demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, manufacturers have introduced a number of transmission improvements over the past three years, including the incorporation of a higher number of gears and new technologies such as the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The need for transmission in an automobile is a consequence of the characteristics of the internal combustion engine. Engines typically operate over a range of 600 to about 7000 revolutions per minute, while car wheels rotate between 0 rpm to 1800 rpm. Furthermore, an engine provides its highest torque and power outputs unevenly across the rev range resulting in a torque band and a power band. Often the greatest torque is required when the vehicle is moving from rest or is travelling slowly, while maximum power is needed at high speeds. Therefore, there is a requirement for a system that transforms the engine output so that it can supply high torque at low speeds, and also operate at highway speeds with the motor still operating within its limits. Transmission systems perform and enable this transformation.
