Mercury is a chemical element which is often present in natural gas, petrochemical and some refinery feed streams in the form of element, organic and also inorganic compounds. and therefore its removal is desired. Mercury is present in most natural gas streams to varying levels. Since mercury present in natural gas can damage downstream aluminum heat exchangers to the point of catastrophic failure, such as those used in cryogenic hydrocarbon recovery natural gas plants and in natural gas liquefaction plants removing mercury from natural gas is desired. Mercury amalgamates with aluminum, resulting in a mechanical failure and gas leakage. Removing mercury is also desired to produce mercury-free product streams. If ethane or propane is used as feed for an ethylene plant, the mercury needs to be removed to prevent heat exchanger and catalyst deactivation problems in the ethylene plant. Mercury is a toxic element and hence of significant environmental concern, persistence in the environment, and bioaccumulation in the food chain. Approximately 33% of all mercury emission to the environment is done by domestic coal-fired power plants.
The report covers mercury removal technologies classified as regenerable and non regenerable fixed bed technologies. There are various types of mercury removal technologies such as, Sulphur Impregnated Activated Carbon, Silver Impregnated Molecular Sieve, and Metal Oxides and Sulphides. The market is projected to grow at a CAGR of XX.X% during 2017-2022.
Increasing awareness and need of equipment protection, catalyst protection, maintaining the threshold limit value for health, safety & environment and to improve the quality of products removal of mercury is essential. The mercury removal technology market is expected to grow in North America and Europe due to presence of large scale downstream operations.
