“Spatial light modulators” are mirror shaped arrays that contain a high number of single micro mirrors on a semiconductor chip. The structure of the device is based on a highly integrated customized electronic circuit, which permits an individual analog deflection of any of the micro mirrors. These systems are based on translucent or reflective liquid crystal micro displays.
The spatial light modulator devices can be used in different applications for real-time optical information processing such as optical switching, optical neural systems, optical beam steering, digital holography, image projection, and holographic display. Currently, the commercially available SLMs include Digital Micro-Mirror Device (DMD), Liquid Crystal (LC), Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS), and Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal on Silicon (FLCoS). They are widely used in various display systems such as projection TVs, computer projectors, three-dimensional (3D) displays, and for Virtual-Reality (VR) projection.
