Global Connected Grid Market, by Application (Defense & Military, Campus/Institutional, Commercial, Others), by Consumption Pattern (Urban/Metropolitan, Semi-Urban, Rural/Island), by Geography (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, RoW) Forecasts to 2019
Many countries generate electricity in large, centralized facilities, such as nuclear power plants, solar power plants, or hydropower plants. These plants transmit electricity for long distances and can negatively affect the environment. Thus, a distributed generation system is used, which allows collection of energy from various sources while lowering the environmental impacts and improving the security of supply.

A microgrid is a smaller power grid that can operate either by itself or in connection with a larger utility grid. When connected to a macrogrid or utility grid, the network is treated as a connected grid system. Connected grid microgrids can be used to serve small areas comprising a few houses as well as large areas, for example military installations. However, the power transmission remains dependent on the main grid and any potential damage to the main grid may result in power failure of the entire network.
Solar PV power technology is most commonly used in grid tied systems. In solar PV systems, grid-connected microgrid could reduce the grid‘s operational cost by participating in demand response management. As long as the solar array generates more electricity than a household consumes, the electricity would be free. If the household or business consumes more electricity than is generated, it would be billed only for the excess. Furthermore, by having a main grid, grid tied systems can utilize more renewable energies and can solve the fluctuation problem of renewable energies.
For all the benefits that connected grid delivers, scale, technology, and power sources prove to be limiting factors for efficient and secure power surety. .
However, despite the technical challenges, utility reluctance, and absence of clear cut revenue structure, the future for microgrids looks promising. The market presents an opportunity for small and big utility players as well as for industrial and residential communities that could leverage microgrids to optimize their energy costs with an added advantage of selling energy back to the grid during periods of peak demand.
Major companies operating in the global connected grid market are ABB Ltd. (U.S.), Siemens AG (Germany), Honeywell International (U.S.), General Electric (U.S.), and Eaton Corporation (Ireland), among others.
