Global Hybrid Grid Market by Application (Defense & Military, Campus/Institutional, Commercial, and others), by Consumption Pattern (Urban/Metropolitan, Semi-Urban, and Rural/Island), and by Geography (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and RoW) Forecasts to 2019
Several countries generate electricity in large centralized facilities, such as fossil fuel plants, nuclear power plants, large solar power plants or hydropower plants. These plants transmit electricity across long distances which can negatively affect the environment. Thus, a distributed generation system needs to be used, which would allow collection of energy from many sources and lead to lower environmental impacts and improved security of supply. Thus, the use of hybrid grid as an efficient and reliable source for the energy systems of the future is gaining influence.
The global hybrid grid market was valued at $1,051.2 million in 2014 and is projected to reach $1,922.5 million by 2019 at a CAGR of 12.8% from 2014 to 2019. The market, by application was led by campus/institutional in 2014, with a share of 40.4%. It is projected to reach a value of $773.7 million by 2019 at a CAGR of 12.7% from 2014 to 2019. The commercial application market is estimated to register the fastest growth at a CAGR of 17.9% through 2019. North America is a key market for the global hybrid grid market. The North American hybrid grid market was valued at $621.2 million in 2014 and is expected to reach $1,019.7 million by 2019, at a CAGR of 10.4% during the forecast period of 2014 to 2019.

Microgrids are distributed, small-scale versions of the centralized conventional grid systems. A distinguished feature of a microgrid is its ability to separate and isolate itself from the utility grid (macrogrid) seamlessly with little or no disruption to the loads within the system, and automatically reconnect as and when required.
The hybrid microgrid is the combination of the energy sources used to produce a microgrid. In the past, several historical reasons had led to the growing influence of AC technology over DC power systems. However in the present times, increasing technological advancements in power conversion, generation, transmission, and consumption are establishing the stronghold of DC power system once again. This DC power system is expected to prevail strongly in the microgrids, which is the future of smart distribution systems. Thus, by evolving the hybrid AC/DC microgrids, the integration of the DC technology into the existing AC systems could be ensured.
However, despite the benefits that are offered by hybrid microgrids, a number of factors hinder their adoption and development. Scale, technology, and power sources are few such elements related to this technology that prove to be limiting factors for an efficient and secure power surety. Despite the increase in interest, investment, and technological developments of the hybrid technology, there are still significant technological barriers.
The global hybrid grid market was valued at $1,051.2 million in 2014 and is projected to reach $1,922.5 million by 2019 at a CAGR of 12.8% from 2014 to 2019.
Major companies operating in the global hybrid grid market are ABB Ltd. (U.S.), Siemens AG (Germany), Honeywell International (U.S.), General electric (U.S.), and Lockheed Martin (U.S.)
